Jean Marc Montel’s Probably Unconsciously Inspired art exhibition launched mid-February at the student and faculty-operated Ganzo restaurant. Montel collaborated with Florence University of the Arts students to host the exhibition, which will be running until March 17th. The event kicked off with aperitivo, where students and art enthusiasts were presented with plates of canapés, cheeses, cured meats, bright orange clementines, and other dishes freshly prepared by the Ganzo staff.

The student curators Michaela Bubier, Julia Ennis, Jacqueline Krigbaum, Emily Junker, and Alyssa Sever who worked with Montel are a part of the gallery curation class at FUA and had the pleasure of giving the opening speech to introduce Montel and his work. The group also had a chance to visit Montel at his home in Montespertoli, Tuscany, to get an in-depth look into where he works and witness the creative process behind his collection. The students then worked with the graphic design department to create the catalogues for the event and set up the exhibit at Ganzo.

Probably Unconsciously Inspired is a collection of 18 paintings featuring horses and poppies as a heavily used motif. Each painting expresses the liveliness and simplistic beauty of nature. Montel says he prefers to paint horses because he believes they are man’s earliest companions. He originally intended to solely paint horses but then decided to add poppies during his creative process to build off of a previous exhibition, which focused on flowers. Although he initially started work on this collection in 2001, it wasn’t until this past year that things really started moving forward. For the most part, he says the artwork showcased in this collection was created in three week’s time.

Montel believes his emotions are spoken through his paintings. Each painting had an explanation except for his self-portrait. When asked why, Montel responded, “The emotions from the painting belong to the viewer, not the maker. If you see me in there, you know it is well done. I know that is me. It’s me because I am sometimes red, sometimes blue, sometimes yellow, and sometimes green so I can’t comment.”

Montel’s collection is a great representation of the artistic creativity flowing through Florence. Make sure to come to Ganzo to view the Probably Unconsciously Inspired exhibition before March 17th!
