Spring 2016 Guitar Workshop students were involved in a special studio session collaboration that combined music performance techniques, production, and photography. Students utilized course skills to create a playlist that has been recently released this summer. The playlist includes original tracks such as those of Silas Gilliam, while Santo Parisi, Ryan Berry, and Jessica Watzman performed arrangements, pieces accompanied by voice, and acoustic versions of well-known songs.
The student group, which included beginner students with no prior experience and intermediate level participants, was guided by instructor Fabio Binarelli in the acquisition of various guitar techniques - accompaniment, fingerpicking, as well as the more difficult skills of solo techniques and improv as the course progresses.
As the students consolidated their skills and edited a potential playlist, they were assisted by faculty member Samuele Bucelli who recorded, mixed, and mastered the audio performances for sharing on the SoundCloud platform at FUA’s music production studio in Corso Tintori. In addition to the music production goals of the guitar course, the experience was also captured in images and portraits for the SoundCloud playlist by FUA photography instructor Marco Gualtieri.
Binarelli shares, “This small but powerful project was a positive experience for all involved: we were able to demonstrate how a well-dosed combination of simplicity and passion can help a class achieve great results. A fundamental element for the students this past spring was to properly measure and track their individual progress on a weekly basis, and it’s great that each individual took home a significant and concrete memory of the Florence experience.”
The Guitar Workshop course’s summer playlist can be heard on SoundCloud.
