FLORENCE-NYC JAMES BEARD PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIP

We are honored to offer the Cody Durbin scholarship through Florence University of the Arts and its hospitality division Apicius, supported by the Durbin family and individual donors of the gift of education. Established in 2015, the scholarship supports future participants of Apicius culinary arts programs including TuttoToscana. Cody was a student from Johnson County Community College who studied abroad with us at FUA in the summer and fall of 2013. During his fall stint at FUA, Cody participated in the TuttoToscana special program where he exhibited his culinary arts passion and skills, providing those he cooked for a highly memorable experience. Cody passed away due to a tragic accident at Lake Michigan in 2015. Those who knew and studied with him carry the memory of his dedication to his studies and what was the beginning of a promising culinary career. The scholarship's scope is to keep Cody's spirit alive through this scholarship, which seeks to cultivate the dreams of future chefs.

  

Available Scholarships:

 

The scholarship will cover the entire tuition and application fees related to the program. Two scholarship types are available:

• 9-credit, 4-week program
• 3-credit, 1-week program

 

TuttoToscana Study Away Program:

 

The FUA TuttoToscana Study Away program is a flexible model for international study opportunities in Florence and NYC in the fall/spring academic seasons. Students may select Florence Session II 3-week courses that feature a course project geared towards the preparation of FUA TuttoToscana events and activities in NYC scheduled during the Intersession Week III. The Intersession Week represents the fourth study away week in NYC featuring events at the James Beard Foundation. Coursework in both Florence and NYC features 3 different areas of involvement and allows students to take on the challenge of bridging two cosmopolitan cities through hospitality, digital media, the visual arts (fall) or fashion (spring), and food management with the objective of bringing Tuscan culture to NYC.

 

The scholarship does not include:

  • Transportation
  • Accommodation and meals
  • Books
  • Airfare
  • For Area 3 students, the scholarship does not include the other culinary uniform components (hat, shoes, apron) and knife set. A chef jacket is included.
     

Program Deadlines:

 

Fall 2019: The application deadline is June 1st, 2019.  Selected candidates will be notified by July 15th, 2019.

 

Spring 2020: The application deadline is November 1st, 2019.  Selected candidates will be notified by November 15th, 2019.

 

Application Process:

 

To apply for the scholarship please send the following:

  • Unofficial transcript from your home university. If no longer a student, send the most recent transcript.
  • Personal Statement, resume, and one reference letter (work/academic)

Group and individual interviews will be held during the month of July 2019 (Fall) and November 2019 (Spring)

Program Areas and Course Loads:

 

Area 1: Event Planning & Communications (3*-6-9 credits)
Area 2: Art Direction: Digital Media and Visual Arts (Fall) / Fashion (Spring) (3*-6-9 credits)
Area 3: Food Management and Production for Special Events (3*-6-9 credits)
*3-credit options are held directly in NYC as a 1-week session.

Scholarships Involvement:

 

4-week program: Scholarship winners are required to dedicate at least 10 hours per week throughout the session in Florence, activities will be monitored by a coordinator.

 

1-week program: Scholarship winners are required to write an essay of 2000 words at the end of the program. The topic will be decided with the faculty supervisor.
